NU7: your checklist.

Zcash changes its rules at block 3,543,405. Most holders have nothing to do. A few have a deadline that can't be undone.

3 days to go · Checked 20 Oct 2026. NU7 activates at block 3,543,405.

Where is your ZEC?

Nobody needs your recovery phrase, or needs you to send ZEC anywhere, for an upgrade. Upgrade scams.

On an exchange or in an ETF

Nothing to do. The exchange or fund runs the upgrade for you. Deposits and withdrawals may pause for a few hours around it, as they did at past upgrades. That is normal.

A Zcash fund holds the ZEC for you: you own shares, not coins. Want ZEC in a wallet of your own?

In a wallet app

  1. Update the app when its NU7 version is out. None of the main wallets (Zodl, Zingo, Zkool, Edge) had released it on 20 Oct 2026. After NU7 the network only accepts the newer transaction formats, so an app that still writes the old one can't send.
  2. Don't send in the hour around the switch. A payment still waiting when NU7 switches on is dropped from the network's queue and has to be sent again.

Update late? Your ZEC is still safe: it's recorded on the network, not stored in the app. At July’s Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3) Zodl put it this way: “your funds are safe, regardless of when you update”. Until you update, the app may not be able to send.

Still on Ywallet? It never added the newest pool, Ironwood. Its developer's newer app is Zkool. Where each wallet stands.

On a Ledger

Used the old “Zcash Shielded” app by Zondax, through Ywallet or Zkool? Ledger removes it from Ledger Wallet on 5 Nov 2026. Ledger's own Zcash app can't see the shielded ZEC those accounts hold in the Sapling pool.

  1. Update Ledger Wallet desktop to 4.23 or later, and your Ledger to its latest system version. Ledger's steps don't work on the Nano S or the Ledger Wallet phone app.
  2. By 5 Nov: open the legacy account in Zkool and unshield the Sapling ZEC to your transparent address, as Ledger's guide shows.

The ZEC then appears in Ledger Wallet by itself, and you can shield it again there: Ledger's Zcash app holds shielded ZEC in Ironwood. Unshielding puts the amount on the public chain for a moment; that is the route Ledger gives.

Only transparent ZEC in that account?
Nothing to unshield. It already shows in Ledger Wallet.
Already on Ledger's own Zcash app?
Keep the device and Ledger Wallet up to date. Zodl 3.17 and later also works with a Ledger.

On a Keystone or Trezor

Keystone
Install Keystone's NU7 firmware when it ships, and update the wallet app you pair it with. The latest firmware, 3.1.4 (16 Oct), doesn't mention NU7 yet.
Trezor
Trezor holds only transparent ZEC. Its developers say Trezor Suite already signs Zcash in the newer format, so Suite users shouldn't be affected (8 Oct). Keep the device and Suite updated.

Need to move ZEC around the switch? Don't count on a hardware wallet being ready on the day. After the June upgrade (NU6.2), Trezor users couldn't move ZEC until a fix shipped on 21 Sep. The coins were never lost, only stuck.

Coins from 2016 to 2018 (zc addresses)

After NU7, ZEC in Sprout can't be spent, and that may never be switched back on. 12,270 ZEC is still there.

You may have some if your old addresses start with zc, or you used a full-node wallet back then: zcashd, Zcash Swing, the Zcash Desktop GUI, Zcash4Win or Zcash4Mac. You need the old wallet.dat file or an exported key: a recovery phrase alone doesn't bring Sprout coins back.

Rescue guide, step by stepFinish before NU7 (5 Nov). A rescue scan can take a day, so start now.

You run a node, a mining pool or a service

Upgrade before activation. This time old software doesn't stop by itself: it keeps running on the old rules and splits away from everyone else. Watch for the Zebra release that carries NU7's mainnet block; on 20 Oct 2026 the latest was 7.0.0-rc.0, from before the block was proposed.

What NU7 changes

A block every 25 seconds, not 75
A payment gets its first confirmation about three times sooner. Exchanges set their own confirmation counts, so deposits may not credit three times faster.
The same new ZEC per day
Each block pays a third as much, so the daily issuance, the 21 million cap and the next halving (November 2028) don't move.
The old transaction format stops working
Only the newer formats (version 5 and 6) stay valid. Sprout coins can only move in the old one, which is why they get stuck.
60% of each fee leaves circulation
It goes into a reserve that pays out again from about 2031, without raising the cap.
Development funding carries on
The 8% to Zcash Community Grants and 12% to the coinholder fund keep running to the third halving, as before. The numbers.
